War has a new domain and that is Space

The president of the US Donald Trump has revived a 20 year old debate about whether the Pentagon should move its space activities to a new command.

Donald Trump said that “Space is a war-fighting domain just like land, air and sea” while standing before a Marine Corps F/A-18 Fighter jet while addressing service members March 13 in San Diego. “We may even have a Space Force, develop another one. We have the Air Force, we’ll have the Space Force.”

But even though he said that, the US has already a very large footprint in space either with spy satellites or other platforms that support government surveillance, communications, weather forecasting and all sorts of other activities. Alongside these is also the new top-secret aircraft being built by Boeing Co. the X-37B, who had its first mission in September and can fly for extended periods of time across the globe. And these are the known, imagine how many more unknown payloads there are.

Of course America is not alone up there, China has also a prevalent presence demonstrating also its anti-satellite weapons in 2007 that resulted in a blow-back against the Chinese government. Its safe to say that a number of nations is interested in “anti-sat” weaponry and likely have researched them.

Air Force General John Hyten, commander of U.S. Strategic Command said while testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee that: “We must normalize space and cyberspace as warfighting domains.” and “There is no war in space, just as there is no war in cyberspace. There is only war, and war can extent to any domain.”

The push for space comes after the fact that both Russia and China have developed their technologies in this field and since they use space mainly for military priorities, by denying the space advantage that the United States have, is a key strategy for them.

Regardless the coming years will see a further change in the domain of war and how it is waged whether on Earth or in space.
